Director, Center for the Advancement of Teaching (Faculty Administrator position)

The Director of the Center for the Advancement of Teaching (known as CAT) will join and co-lead a University-wide effort to advance learning-centered, evidence-based, and culturally responsive teaching through collaboration with faculty, units, and University leaders.  

Working closely with the Assistant Vice President for Teaching & Learning, the Center Director will help define and maintain the team’s strategy and direction through oversight of all Center programming, services, and day-to-day operations, by coaching and developing team members, and by leading the team through ambiguity and change in an extremely dynamic environment. The Director will co-lead all large-scale, signature initiatives and projects, including the Gateway, Evaluating Teaching, and Hybrid projects. They will provide leadership to the Center by enhancing its visibility among and establishing relationships with internal and external stakeholders, as well as by promoting collaboration and partnerships among units and faculty. They will likewise provide leadership in institutional development, which may include serving as a liaison to the faculty senate and on university committees related to teaching & learning. The CAT Director will support faculty across disciplines, ranks, and career stages in their growth as reflective teachers by co-designing and facilitating a wide variety of educational development programming, including ones focused on online and hybrid teaching. They will follow, draw on, and disseminate education research and best practices relevant to enhancing course design, assessment strategies, teaching effectiveness, and student learning, particularly with regard to culturally responsive teaching practices essential to FIU's context and student demographics. The Director will assist the AVP for Teaching and Learning with budgeting, strategic planning, and fundraising for the Center.

Minimum Qualifications

 This position requires a master’s degree. Successful candidates must have 6 years of teaching experience at the college level; at least 2 years in a full-time faculty assignment; a demonstrated understanding of the principles and practices of learning-centered, evidence-based, and/or culturally responsive teaching; demonstrated expertise in designing and facilitating workshops

or other learning experiences for faculty; demonstrated effectiveness leading collaborative teams; and superior interpersonal and communication skills.

Desired qualifications include a commitment to the use of data and analyses to inform, evaluate, and refine practices; and experience teaching online or hybrid courses, and/or facilitating educational development related to online or hybrid teaching.
