About the FIU Department of Architecture and School of Architecture
Within the College of Communication, Architecture + The Arts, the Department of Architecture resides in the School of Architecture, with the Department of Interior Architecture and Department of Landscape Architecture + Environmental Urban Design. All three departments share a rich history of interdisciplinary design and research collaboration. The School of Architecture was ranked #17 among public universities in North America by the 2021 QS World University Rankings by Subject. The Department of Architecture was also ranked #19 by DesignIntelligence among programs whose graduates are most hired nationwide.
With over 650 students, the Department of Architecture educates students in the profession of architecture to become thoughtful practitioners and critical thinkers. Students arrive at various points in their educational careers—as freshmen, as third-year transfer students, and as graduate students to pursue an accredited, professional Master of Architecture (MArch) degree. The department has recently instituted a post-professional Doctorate of Design (DDes) degree, which draws students internationally and offers them opportunities to teach and pursue funded research while studying.
The School of Architecture facilities are housed in the award-wining Paul L. Cejas School of Architecture Building designed by Bernard Tschumi, which includes the Fabrication; Robotics and Digital Fabrication; and Structural and Environmental Technologies Labs. Additional facilities include the School of Architecture Miami Beach Urban Studios that houses the new 3D printing technologies of the CARTA Innovation Lab, and a new facility in the Wynwood Arts District. Our faculty is engaged in a wide range of research and creative activities in sustainability and climate change, urbanism, affordable housing, green building automation, innovative teaching techniques, culture, and history of global modernism, performative scripting, digital fabrication, and architectural installations. To enhance student learning and support faculty research, the Department offers a broad range of study abroad programs. The FIU School of Architecture supports a diverse and inclusive environment that challenges biases and prejudices as part of its academic curriculum, design studios, and engagement with the community. These ideals are championed by the students, staff, and faculty members of the school. For more information about Architecture at FIU, visit http://carta.fiu.edu/architecture/.
Position Description
The Department of Architecture in the College of Communication, Architecture + The Arts invites applications for a full-time, 9-month, tenure-track faculty position at the Assistant Professor level starting Fall semester of 2023. The program is particularly interested in candidates with research experience and a successful record of scholarship with a humanities-based approach to the built environment, settlements, and/or civilization. The Department seeks individuals who are committed to excellent teaching that engages and inspires students. Teaching responsibilities will include undergraduate and graduate courses in history/theory, seminars, and design studios as appropriate. Over the past decade, The Department of Architecture has integrated issues of environment and social justice into all aspects of the curriculum. In addition, the Department encourages collaboration and interdisciplinary initiatives with the Departments of Interior Architecture and Landscape Architecture + Environmental Urban Design. The Department of Architecture also enjoys close ties with the FIU Wolfsonian Public Humanities Lab, a synergistic hub for community engagement in the humanities; and with the FIU Institute of Environment, a comprehensive solutions center dedicated to combating environmental crises. Both centers offer opportunities for collaborative, grant-based research.
