Stempel College seeks an energetic and visionary leader to serve as the Chair of the Department of Environmental Health Sciences. The Chair will head a department with a diverse and ambitious research portfolio and foster the success of faculty members, post-doctoral fellows, masters, and Ph.D. students in collaboration with other units and investigators within and outside Stempel College. Ideally, the selected candidate will have current funding and a track record of research and educational activities in Environmental Health Sciences. We are now accepting applications for a tenured or tenure-earning Associate/Full Professor & Department Chair in the Department of Environmental Health Sciences (EHS) within the College of Public Health.


The Department of EHS addresses health effects related to environmental toxicant exposures through research, education, and service to promote healthier lives. The department includes extramurally funded faculty with research expertise in cancer, stem cell biology, neuroinflammation, mitochondrial dysfunction, gene-environment interactions, and neurodegenerative diseases. The EHS department houses one of FIU-designated Emerging Preeminent Programs: the Brain, Behavior, & the Environment Program. We seek candidates with broad experience with particular emphasis on basic and translational neurotoxicology and neuroscience, neuroinflammation, the exposome, environmental carcinogenesis, and the role of environmental chemicals on neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease. The department was recently awarded a new Training Grant from the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) entitled Training in Environmental Neuroscience that is housed at Stempel College in collaboration with other units of the university including Psychology and Biomedical Engineering. This new training program for doctoral students and postdoctoral fellows started July 1, 2023.


Expectations and Responsibilities:
The Chair will provide leadership to support and advance the Department's research, academic, and service programs. The candidate will primarily be responsible for collaborative department leadership, administering the budget, coordinating teaching assignments, and evaluating department faculty and staff. The candidate is also expected to engage in extramurally funded research, teach and advise graduate students, mentor faculty, and serve on dissertation committees. The successful applicant will have a compelling record of scholarship and be a recognized international leader in their field of research and whose profile and research proposal demonstrate an excellent fit with institutional strategic goals and the aims of the position. The Chair will have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, serve as a strong advocate for the Department and engage in transparent decision-making while nurturing a culture of consensus and collaboration. Chairs serve as part of the College leadership team to advance the research, teaching, and service mission of the College.


Required Qualifications:
Qualified candidates are required to have an earned doctoral degree in Environmental Health Sciences or related field, or an MD with significant relevant research experience in the Environmental Health Sciences; a record of successful institutional or academic leadership, a demonstrated commitment to supporting diversity, equity, and inclusion. As appropriate for rank, competitive applicants should have a strong, extramural, and collaborative funded research program in place as Principal Investigator. A track record of peer-reviewed publications, and effective teaching in the relevant discipline is also required.
